Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 slices of high-quality white bread e.g., brioche or Texas toast
  • 2 tablespoons mustard
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1/2 pound thickly sliced baked ham
  • 1/2 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Optional toppings: powdered sugar honey, or fruit preserves

Instructions

  • Prepare the Egg Mixture: In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs with a pinch of salt and black pepper until well combined. Set aside.
  • Assemble the Sandwiches: Lay out the four slices of bread. Spread mustard on two slices and mayonnaise on the other two. Layer the ham and shredded Gruyere cheese on the slices with mustard, then season with additional salt and pepper if desired. Top with the remaining slices of bread (mayonnaise side down) and press gently to secure the fillings.
  • Heat the Skillet: Preheat a skillet over medium heat and add the butter, allowing it to melt and coat the skillet evenly.
  • Dip the Sandwiches: Carefully dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are thoroughly coated.
  • Cook the Sandwiches: Place the sandwiches in the hot skillet and cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  • Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and serve immediately. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar, drizzle with honey, or serve with fruit preserves for added sweetness.

  • Bread Selection: Use sturdy bread like brioche or Texas toast to hold up well during dipping and cooking.
  • Dairy-Free Option: Use dairy-free cheese and butter substitutes for a dairy-free version.
