  • 6 cups apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp) peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar packed
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch (or arrowroot powder for gluten-free)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • Pinch salt
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup water or unsweetened apple cider

Instructions

  • Rinse, peel, core, and slice apples. Toss with lemon juice in a bowl.
  • Whisk sugars, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a saucepan.
  • Stir in water (or cider) until smooth.
  • Stir in apple slices and cook until bubbly.
  • Reduce heat and simmer for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Test the sauce thickness by coating the back of a spoon.
  • Let the filling rest for 5–10 minutes off heat.
  • Spoon into jars, seal, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Notes

Toss sliced apples in lemon juice right after cutting to keep them fresh. Choose firm, crisp apples for the best result.
