The Greystone Mansion, often referred to as the Doheny Mansion, is a Tudor Revival residence in Beverly Hills, California’s Trousdale Estates, on a landscaped estate with characteristic formal English gardens.
The 16 acres (6.5 hectares) of land contain the 55-room, 46000 sq.ft. (4,300 m2) previous home, which is built in the Tudor style. It was the priciest mansion in California when it was built, costing about $4 million (around $63 million in 2021).

The Greystone Mansion’s Background
Oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny gave it to his son Edward “Ned” Doheny, Jr., and his family as a present. The estate was acquired by the City of Beverly Hills in 1965, and after becoming a city park in 1971, it was listed as Doheny Estate/Greystone on the National Register of Historic Properties in 1976. The house and surrounding area are frequently utilized as backdrops for movies and television programs. One of Hollywood’s most recognizable settings is the spiral staircase of the mansion.
Four months after moving into Greystone with his wife, Lucy, and their five children, Ned Doheny committed suicide together with his assistant, Hugh Plunkett, in a guest bedroom on February 16, 1929. Doheny’s widow Lucy remarried and resided in the home until 1955, when she sold the property to Chicago businessman Paul Trousdale, who turned it into Trousdale Estates. Henry Crown then purchased the home, renting it to movie studios. Crown intended to divide the land into several parcels and demolish the mansion in 1963. In 1965, Beverly Hills bought the property to halt the demolition.
On September 16, 1971, the estate was designated as a city park, and on April 23, 1976, it was entered into the National Register of Historic Properties. From 1965 to 1982, the city leased the mansion to the American Film Institute for one dollar a year in the hopes that the organization would cover maintenance and repairs.

Greystone Mansion’s Exterior and Interior Architecture
The P.J. Walker Company built the Greystone Mansion, which was created by renowned Southern Californian architect Gordon B. Kaufmann. Paul G. Thiene, the landscape architect, used a mash-up of Gothic and neoclassical architectural styles.

The Mansion’s bedrooms were dispersed around the second floor, but the master bedroom suite was in the west wing and had a sitting room, two bathrooms, a dressing room, and a massage room in addition to the other amenities. Every room with a southern exposure had a sweeping view of the Los Angeles Basin, extending from downtown to the Santa Monica Bay beaches. A spiral staircase in the north wing led to an entertainment wing that had a movie theater room, an authentic Brunswick bowling alley, a billiards room, and a secret bar. This wing also housed the bedrooms of the two oldest boys.
Current Uses of Greystone Mansion
The Beverly Hills Flower & Garden Festival is one of the special events held at Greystone, which is now a public park. Because of its beauty, well-kept gardens, and location in Beverly Hills, it is frequently used as a filmmaking location.
