The Boyle Hotel, one of Los Angeles’ oldest commercial structures, is located across from the Mariachi Plaza in Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles.
This Victorian-era hotel, designed by W. R. Norton in 1889 for community leaders George Cummings and his wife Maria del Sacramento Lopez, became a social and political hub for Boyle Heights and stimulated residential and commercial development.

The Boyle Hotel housed mariachi musicians who gathered everyday at Mariachi Plaza to be employed. These musicians and other Boyle Heights social and civic events gathered there. After years of neglect, the neighborhood’s grandest hotel was under risk of demolition in 2006.
In 2007, the Hotel was named the 891st Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
The Boyle Hotel’s west side was expanded with a new residential extension in 2012. Each rebuilt unit contains a kitchen and bathroom, unlike the original single-room occupancy hotel. Seismic retrofits and safety upgrades were made to the building. The building’s corner cupola, brick façade, and storefronts were restored using antique photos.
Chattel worked with non-profit developer East Los Angeles Community Corporation and architect Richard Barron to ensure rehabilitation plans met Secretary Standards as historic preservation consultant. In 2013, Chattel’s Historic Preservation Certification Application and National Register of Historic Places submission featured the Boyle . Historic and Low-Income Housing tax credits financed $7.6 million in rehabilitation and $13.3 million in new development.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation honored the Hotel in 2013 for its affordable accommodations in a historic structure.
