Significance of American Brewery Company
The Northeast Baltimore brewery was one of the biggest in the state of Maryland when John Frederick Wiessner, a German immigrant, constructed the American Brewery Company (also known as Wiessner Brewery) in 1863 and rebuilt it in 1887 for his Weissner Brewing Company. At its busiest, the brewery employed 61 people: 16 for brewing tasks, 17 for driving, 14 for bottling, 8 for garage labor, and 6 for office duties.
The elevator for the 10,000-bushel grain was located in the building’s central tower. The establishment had to close due to prohibition in 1920. The American Malt Company purchased the brewery from the Wiessner family in 1931, and they updated the internal machinery and ran it until 1973. Exterior Architecture
Despite having three towers, the brew house only has five levels. The two towers on either side have six floors each, while the central tower has seven. The structure’s stained glass windows, intricate external brickwork, and various windows in arched, rounded, rectangular, and square designs give the residential area a sense of the odd.
The farthest south of them was constructed in 1896 as a house for the proprietors of the brewery. It is a brick structure with three stories with brownstone trim. Brownstone with rosette designs make up the cornice and door frame. The window cornices feature the same rosette motif with a corbel in the middle. A wooden cornice on the structure itself has been painted green recently. The interior is currently gutted, and the windows are boarded up.
The two-story, three-section office building next door features three sections. The façade of the southernmost part is made of rusticated brownstone. The entryway and window on the first story are framed by brownstone arches. Over the divisions of the first level, the second story’s four rectangular windows are set symmetrically. A triangular chunk of stone with the year 1892 engraved on it is located above the roof line.
With the exception of being brick with stone archivolts, the middle portion is identical to the first described. The year 1896 is inscribed on the triangular stone portion. Built in 1900, the final and northernmost part is also made of brick. Brick arches on the exterior suggest six divisions, and the garage entrance is in the center of a slightly bigger part. One semi-arched first floor window and one arched second floor window can be found in each of the smaller portions.
